Bisbee provides first-time sewer service to Tintown residents

  • City of Bisbee expands service with addition of new Tintown Wastewater Collection System
  • NADB provided a US$1 million grant for the project

Bisbee, Arizona – A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held today to mark the completion of the Tintown Sanitary Sewer Project. The North American Development Bank (NADB) has provided a US$1 million grant to partially fund the US$1.69 million project. This is the first time Tintown residents are receiving services from a dedicated and centralized sewer system.

The grant funds are being provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through the NADB’s Border Environment Infrastructure Fund (BEIF).

The ceremony was attended by project leaders and city officials including Bisbee Mayor Ron Oertle; Tom Klimek, City of Bisbee Public Works Director; Alex Hinojosa, NADB Deputy Managing Director; and Renata Manning-Gbogbo, Project Director for the Border Environment Cooperation Commission (BECC).

The Tintown Wastewater Collection System project, certified by BECC in 2012, included the construction of a package lift station, a 558-foot force main, installation of about 2,900 ft of sewer lines and 32 residential sewer connections, as well as the decommissioning of septic tanks and cesspools.

“It is exciting to see this project come to fruition,” said former City Councilman Benny Scott, joined by current Council Members, Anna Cline and Shirley Doughty. “The residents of Tintown are well-deserving of this new resource that will ensure proper water disposal and sewage treatment.”

Through this project, an estimated 12,300 gallons of wastewater will be collected and pumped on a daily basis to the City of Bisbee’s San Jose Wastewater Treatment Plant, helping reduce environmental and health related risks associated with substandard cesspools and failing septic systems.

“We are thrilled to see the completion of the Tintown facility,” said Hinojosa. “This project is a great example of what a great partnership can accomplish. NADB and the City of Bisbee have come together to create a healthy environment for the Tintown citizens for years to come.”
