Chihuahua municipalities receive NADB grants for solid waste equipment

  • US$1.1 million for Ahumada, Madera and Nuevo Casas Grandes

Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua – The North American Development Bank (NADB) and the Government of the State of Chihuahua signed a US$1.1 million grant agreement to finance the purchase of landfill equipment for the three municipalities of Ahumada, Nuevo Casas Grandes and Madera.

Javier Corral Jurado, Governor of the State of Chihuahua, along with Maria Elena Giner, General Manager of the Border Environment Cooperation Commission (BECC) and NADB Deputy Managing Director Alex Hinojosa, presided over the signing ceremony, which will enable the acquisition of various trucks and other machinery for the efficient operation of the sanitary landfills recently constructed in each of the municipalities.

These three municipalities, which altogether represent more than 87,800 residents, provide waste collection services to 100% of the population. However, the collected waste was being disposed in controlled, open-air dumpsites, so a new sanitary landfill was constructed in each municipality with federal funding from the Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), as well as resources from the municipalities. The State Government is working with the respective municipal authorities to close the dumpsites, now that the landfills are in operation.

The three landfill equipment projects sponsored by the respective municipal governments were certified by BECC in June 2016, and the grants are being provided by NADB through its Community Assistance Program (CAP).

“We are improving the quality of life for 88,000 people with adequate disposal of solid waste in these three municipalities,” said Ms. Giner. “It has been a privilege to work with the communities and the State Government of Chihuahua to accomplish this important step for the environment of these communities.”

“These grants will complement the funding needed to optimize landfill operations,” stated Mr. Hinojosa. “We are pleased to have partnered with all three levels of government so that these facilities may function at 100% efficiency.”
