First graduates to receive diplomas from ITESM for water utility management program

Monterrey, Nuevo León – Today, a ceremony was held to celebrate the first group of graduates of the new diploma-level basic water utility management program offered by the North American Development Bank (NADB) and taught by the Latin American and Caribbean water center, Centro del Agua para América Latina y el Caribe (CDA), of the Monterrey Technological Institute (ITESM) in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.

Representatives of NADB, the CDA, the ITESM School of Engineering and Sciences and the ITESM School of Government and Public Transformation (EGyTP) gathered in the EGyTP auditorium to hand out diplomas to the 13 participants who completed the program requirements.

The program consists of five modules and is intended to strengthen the administrative, financial and leadership capabilities necessary to achieve the optimal operation of a water utility. To obtain a diploma and receive ITESM accreditation, participants must deliver a project that can be applied to their respective water utility and has been validated by ITESM. The graduates represent the water utilities from Victoria and Reynosa, Tamaulipas; Piedras Negras, Coahuila; and Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.

The ceremony was presided over by Dr. Manuel Zertuche, Dean of the School of Engineering and Sciences, and Dr. Salvador Garcia, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering and the academic coordinator of the program. Arturo Augusto Garza Jiménez, Director of the water utility in Piedras Negras, spoke on behalf of the graduates.

In 2015, NADB, CDA and the ITESM School of Engineering signed an agreement to implement a diploma-level program, and the first session was launched mid-2016. For 2017, the program will be offered to utility personnel in the state of Sonora at ITESM’s Sonora Norte campus in Hermosillo, Sonora.
