Landfill gas-to-energy project in Saltillo receives loan funding

The project consists of the design, construction and operation of a biogas plant for methane capture at the municipal landfill in Saltillo with a generation capacity of up to 1.7 MW. The plant which became operational in late 2013 is currently extracting gas from landfill cells 1, 2 and 3 via 53 wells.

"This project is a success story for the generation of energy through the reuse of waste in landfills in Mexican municipalities" stated Gerónimo Gutiérrez, NADB Managing Director, adding that "Lorean has put this plant into operation very efficiently and NADB will monitor the results to promote such projects in other municipalities along the border."

In September 2011, the City of Saltillo awarded Lorean a concession to develop and operate the plant, which will supply electricity to Saltillo through a self-supply contract. The entire project aims to provide up to 45% of the total energy consumption of the municipality.

The project, certified by the Border Environment Cooperation Commission (BECC) in May 2013, is estimated to displace up to 45 tons per year of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) when fully operational.
