NADB signs US$5.26 million grant agreement to expand basic water and wastewater services in Nogales, Sonora

San Antonio, Texas – The North American Development Bank (NADB) and the water utility, Organismo Operador Municipal de Agua potable, Alcantarillado y Saneamiento (OOMAPAS), have signed a US$5.26 million grant agreement to help finance the expansion of the city’s water distribution and wastewater collection systems in residential subdivisions in the southwestern area of Nogales, Sonora.

The grant for this project, certified by the Border Environment Cooperation Commission (BECC) in November 2016, is being provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through the Border Environment Infrastructure Fund (BEIF), which is administered by NADB.

The project, estimated to cost US$10.48 million, will provide first-time access to water and wastewater services for more than 16,700 residents of Nogales and is expected to eliminate approximately 93,000 gallons a day (gd) of untreated or inadequately treated wastewater discharges, thereby reducing water pollution and the risk of waterborne diseases.

“We are pleased to continue supporting Nogales in providing much needed water and wastewater infrastructure that will improve the health and well-being of its residents, as well as protect the water sources shared by both sides of the border,” stated NADB Acting Managing Director Alex Hinojosa.

Construction of the water distribution infrastructure will be carried out in five phases over a two year period in the subdivisions of Luis Donaldo Colosio, El Rastro, Hermanos Flores Magón, Las Torres, Las Primaveras y Jardines de las Montañas. The sanitary sewer system will be expanded to serve 3,506 households in the subdivisions of Luis Donaldo Colosio, Hermanos Flores Magón, Las Torres, Las Primaveras y Jardines de las Montañas. The project also includes the construction of a collector main that will convey the wastewater from the project area to the Estadio Lift Station, which has sufficient capacity to send it to the Los Alisos Wastewater Treatment Plant
