In 2010, the communities of El Millón, Tres Jacales and Jesus Carranza did not have wastewater collection and treatment systems. The population used latrines and septic tanks, the lack of wastewater collection and treatment in the project area resulted in untreated wastewater runoffs, which created a risk for transmission of diseases due to the potential for human contact with unhealthy waters and soil contamination. The untreated discharges had a potential to reach surface and/or groundwater.
The purpose of this project is to eliminate exposure to untreated wastewater produced by El Millón, Tres Jacales and Jesus Carranza by the introduction of sanitary services in these communities, contributing to the reduction of water pollution and the risk of water-borne diseases.
The project consists of the construction of the wastewater collection systems in the three localities and the construction of a 0.13 mgd wastewater treatment plant in El Millón to serve the three communities. The design of this regional plant includes the construction of an anaerobic lagoon, a secondary lagoon and a polishing pond, in addition to a sewage pump station and a pressurized conveyance line.
